Web Sites, Books & Music I Really Dig...

from Shay Youngblood's novel "Black Girl in Paris"

In every nigger is a cup of African blood from kings and queens of a divine nature, mathematicians, craftsmen, men and women of the land. I have known some sisters and brothers would scare Einstein back into East European caves with the magnificence of their minds. We are a people with a practical nature and great vision. We have built nations, discovered treasures for everyday use. Our people are a great race of people, and though the Europeans raped and plundered, we have kept inner riches. You got a cup of African blood and that mean something, means you got a responsibility to be proud of it and use your talents or suffer self-destruction.

from Jeanette Winterson's novel "The Powerbook"

I'd say that love slices lengthways.

She was silent. We were both exposed. The truth is that you can divide your heart in all sorts of interesting ways -- a little here, a little there, most banked at home, some of it coined out for a flutter. But love cleaves through the mind's mathematics. Love's lengthways splits the heart in two -- the heart where you are, the heart where you want to be. How will you heal your heart when love has split it in two?

Visit Extraordinary Web Sites through Cool Sightings

from Lynda Barry's casually cruel, and terribly beautiful book "Cruddy"

Troopers came to the car from four directions with strong flashlights and the flying night bugs were going wild. The father hated troopers. He hated all cops, but troopers most of all.

"Hands on the steering wheel where I can see them." A blinding flashlight beam shot around the inside of the car and hit me in the eyes. When the trooper saw me he lowered it. He said, "Sorry there, sweetheart. Don't be scared." The father whipped his head around and when he saw me his eyes went wide.

"Daddy," I said. Reaching up my hands to him just like he taught me. If we were ever stopped by cops it was what I was supposed to do. Call him Daddy. Act scared. Start to cry. And if I could manage to throw up, that would be handy.

He took more glugs and I took some glugs. It was a strange kind of booze, that Corpse Reviver. It didn't taste bad. It didn't burn. Not in the first ten seconds. And then it just exploded and made you exhale sentimental ignitable funes. I got wobbly, very wobbly. He got wobbly. He said we ought to drink one to Uncle Lemuel and to any other son of a bitch stupid enough to get in our way. He asked me was it me that pitched that rock at his head when he was sitting on the toilet. I told him yes it was. He told me it hurt like hell but he was glad I told the truth and if I ever pulled a stunt like that again he would mash me like a fly. And he smiled and I smiled back.

from Daniel Quinn's astounding book "Ishmael"

Prehistoric man was well adapted to life on this planet. His intelligence and dexterity enabled him to live comfortably in conditions that would utterly defeat any other primate.

Far from scrabbling endlessly and desperately for food, hunter-gathers are among the best-fed people on earth, and they manage this with only two or three hours a day of what you would call work. Our ancestors belonged to the original affluent society.

Consider this. Let's suppose you're one of this nation's homeless. Out of work, no skills, a wife the same, two kids. Nowhere to turn, no hope, no future. But I can give you a box with a button on it.

Press the button and you'll all be whisked instantly back to prehistoric times. You'll be able to speak the language, you'll have all the skills everyone had then.

You'll never again have to worry about taking care of yourself and your family. You'll have it made, you'll be a part of that original affluent society.

So, do you press the button?
